History

Understand the study of History as both a discrete subject and as part of the narrative of human development in conjunction with other areas of study such as human and physical geography, scientific development; societal development; religion; civics etc.

Appreciate why studying History is worthwhile and how it can help us understand our world better today and inform choices about the future.

Appreciate what it means to be an Historian – the skills, methodologies and qualities that help us unlock the past and thereby inform a better understanding of the present.

Develop a knowledge and understanding of chronology – especially through the story of these islands and their peoples.

Develop skills in applying historical concepts to periods of study such as:

  • Comparisons – similarities and differences within and across periods and classes
  • Cause and effect/consequence
  • Continuity, development and change
  • Significance; turning points; key events

Develop and understanding of Historical Enquiry

  • Evidence, artefacts and sources
  • Interpretation, conclusion, bias, presentation of findings

Develop an historical perspective

  • To use informed understanding of past human development and events to explain how the present came to be as it is and to guide judgement about future choices and actions
  • To see patterns in human development across different periods and contexts and model how these forces might affect future decisions and development
  • To extrapolate effects over a range of scales from local to global
  • To consider the interconnectivity of wider functions of society; political, economic, social, religious and cultural, and how these impact on each other
  • To determine relative effects over different time-scales of change

Develop a body of knowledge of British history and of early civilisation from other cultures/locations/periods, to inform the children’s understanding of their world in 21st Century UK and the wider world.
